Rural GP Locum Program – giving country doctors a break

Like most people, rural and remote GPs need to have time off. The Rural GP Locum Program makes it easier for GPs to take a break by finding temporary locum replacements.

This is good news for everybody. The GP can have a holiday, the locum experiences the diversity of country practice and the town continues to receive medical services.

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, the program is run by Rural Health Workforce Australia in partnership with the state and territory Rural Workforce Agencies.

They match prospective locums with rural and remote GPs, and subsidise the costs of engaging a locum.

For urban GPs, rural locum work is a great way to expand skills while practising a more challenging range of medicine and your level of commitment can be as little as two days a year.
